David Wantz

About this Craftsperson

David Wantz is a long-time MASW student. You’ve likely had classes with him over the last 25 years. He is an MASW Master Woodworker and is in the midst of the Alan Lacer Fellowship in Turning. He began spindle-turning in the ’70s by making wooden nightsticks. His dad owned a police supply store and thought the nightsticks would be a hit (so to speak). Over the years, Dave has won several awards for his teaching, including the Crystal Apple from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education—its highest. Now retired, he tries to follow his Norwegian grandmother’s advice: Try to be useful as well as ornamental.
