Steven Mawson started woodturning as a boy in the late 1950s under his uncle’s tutelage. He never lost his interest, desire, or talent. In the early 2000s, after joining the Great Plains Woodturners in Lincoln, Nebraska, Steve began learning to turn spindles and bowls. The club brought in professional turners to do day symposiums, which helped Steve hone his turning skills. In early 2014, Steve saw work of wooden Indian baskets posted online by Jim Adkins. Jim, a well-known woodturner, was making amazing pieces in wood that looked like woven Indian baskets. Jim taught a five-day class in the summer of 2014, and Steve was on board. With Jim as a mentor, Steve continued perfecting his skill. In 2016, he began participating in art shows across the country. His work has been featured on the World of Woodturning website, in Highland Woodturner magazine, and elsewhere.
