Jack Mauch
About this Craftsperson
Jack Mauch is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who specializes in the use of wood veneer. He creates intricate veneer designs for use on furniture, sculpture, and decorative objects. Having grown up in a family that values both creativity and alternative education, Jack quit high school at age 16 to pursue his passion for craft. He studied ceramics and woodworking at the Maine College of Art, earning a BFA in 2006. He later completed a Core Fellowship at Penland School of Craft, through which he studied a wide variety of crafts, including woodworking, pewtersmithing, blacksmithing, and bookbinding. It was during this period that Jack was introduced to marquetry and parquetry and was immediately captivated by these processes. However, as a 3D designer at heart, he felt constrained by the inherently flat nature of veneering. As a result, Jack spent years developing a highly effective digital manufacturing process for creating compound-curving marquetry surfaces. He has become a leading expert in the integration of digital and traditional craft practices. He is a founding member of Treats Studios, a vibrant artist collective in western North Carolina, where he is based.
