Internationally acclaimed artist and designer Marc Fish leads this five-day exploration of the sculptural possibilities of laminated veneer. Based in the UK, Marc has exhibited worldwide at Design Miami, Salon NYC, and Design Shanghai, earning recognition for his poetic balance of strength and fragility. His layered works combine experimental processes such as laminated veneer, cast resin, and specialist finishes with refined details like gilding and subtle illumination. In this intensive workshop, students learn to transform thin veneers into flowing, three-dimensional forms that balance structure with delicacy. Instruction covers glue selection and tinting for seamless results, free-form vacuum bag lamination (including how to make custom bags), and shaping techniques with both hand and power tools. The course then shifts to lighting, where students integrate LEDs, drivers, and color temperatures to bring their piece to life with an ethereal glow. To complete the project, participants design and craft a custom paper shade, with opportunities to explore both traditional methods and unconventional materials such as handmade vegetable-based papers. By the end of the course, each participant will have designed and built a unique sculptural lamp while gaining technical knowledge and creative strategies that can be scaled up for future projects in furniture, lighting, or installation. No prior veneer experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
