Workshop Description
This class will be dedicated to evolving the classic Windsor form and stylizing it for a contemporary setting. In this class, participants will be designing certain elements and building a two-person settee. Design choices can be determined in wood selection, seat pattern design, leg shape, stretcher configuration, and finishing options. Methods of construction are the same as traditional Windsors, namely using green wood to achieve wet/dry joinery and structural integrity. Spindles are to be rived and shaped with a drawknife and spokeshave. The leg holes are bored and reamed for a tapered wedge tenon. Seats are carved with a scorp and a travisher. Harder woods for carving, such as cherry, can initially be power ground and finished with hand tools. Lathe turning; mortise holes drilled by hand following sight lines; leg mortise to be drilled at the drill press. Upper crest rail will be cut and shaped from a single board. Assembly will be done at various increments, starting with the leg and stretcher fitted to the seat. The main emphasis is to take the time to think through the processes, to learn new skills, allowing time for exploration of finishing details.
