Workshop Description
Bored of straight lines? Start here! Basket types and shapes are often limited by symmetry and confined by the structure of basketry materials and found objects. What if it were possible to have control over both? This class begins by reviewing the basics of steam-bending, jig making, and designing with curves to create curvilinear parts that will become the bones of our steam-bent and woven sculptures. These parts will then be combined with a variety of joinery techniques to create voluminous forms that will serve as the structural foundations for basketry. Students will be equipped with a range of traditional and non-traditional basketry techniques to employ on their steam-bent frames, creating multi-dimensional organic forms. A variety of natural and processed materials will be available for these final forms, with discussions on material and technique choices.
