If you have desired to build beautiful handcrafted solid wood furniture but did not know what to do or where to go to get started, then this class is for you! Each student will construct and take home a fully assembled cherry lamp table in the Shaker style. Students will learn how a tree grows, how the different wood grains are formed, and where they are best used in furniture parts. During this two-day course, students will have an opportunity to learn how to mill rough-hewn lumber, lay out the joinery, cut mortise-and-tenon joints, align the orientation of the grain for strength and aesthetics, use hand tool methods, cut tapered table legs, and determine the best ways to assemble and glue up the table. Techniques for attaching tabletops will be discussed and demonstrated. Each student will receive a free CD containing a PowerPoint slide show of all class instructions and demonstrations. Each student will also be given a commemorative hardwood clipboard, custom made for the class, which can be used during the course to organize notes and handouts.
