Workshop Description
This two-week class will provide an overview of furniture produced during America’s early years and the lasting influence of that work today. The focus will be on the essential elements of design, construction, and ornamentation. Participants may choose to design and build a piece of their own or spend their time concentrating on specific techniques to expand their skills. The work may be rooted in a historical period or interpreted as a contemporary piece with classical influences-both approaches are equally valuable. Conversations with Steve by phone or email prior to the start of class will help guide project selection. Special emphasis will be placed on efficient construction methods and improved joinery techniques. Steve will also provide an overview of traditional and modern approaches to ornamentation, working closely with students to develop designs that complement their projects. A wide range of techniques, from traditional hand methods to modern power tools, will be covered. Steve’s philosophy emphasizes efficiency, using the materials, tools, and techniques that best meet the task at hand. With more than three decades as a professional furniture maker and 17 years as a full-time teacher, Steve brings both mastery of the craft and a proven ability to teach it effectively.
