An intuitive furniture designer thinks of the end user, using intuition to anticipate how a piece will be used and operated-making it aesthetically beautiful, proportional, comfortable, and establishing an emotional connection with its surroundings and user. Designing furniture with intuition- “designing from the heart” or “from the gut”-has many expressions, but there seems to be some commonality to these experiences, both of a body sensation and a 6th sense that can organically direct someone toward the best solutions. This skill is useful when creating original designs, resolving proportions, or addressing mechanical issues in your furniture, art, contraptions, or even complex jigs. Woodworkers tend to be somewhat linear and do things in a methodical way that rewards their efforts. This can also hinder the “out of the box” ideas or being in the “Flow,” where we become highly creative and activated without thought. When our overactive, analytical, or critical mind is quiet for a change, time becomes irrelevant, and magic can happen. Everybody is different, but we all have intuition (like the time you were thinking of a friend, and suddenly they called, or having a random hunch that worked out). This short two-day class will be an exercise in recognizing and trusting intuitive urges and overcoming the hesitation to act on them. Students will work on drawing, spend some quiet time, walk in the forest and draw leaves, do a brisk walk, practice basic meditation and breathing exercises, tend to their bodies, and quiet their minds to encourage Flow.
