with Matthew Parkinson
$550
$100 material fee payable to Matthew
Workshop Description
Tomahawk has a storied past in America, evolving from the trade axes of the 16th and 17th centuries that were sold during the colonization of the Americas. These axes soon evolved into tools, sidearms, and elaborate works of art that were used to cement treaties and honor allies. The various subtypes of tomahawks all have a basis in those trade axes and carry features common to all designs. Students will forge a tomahawk using the slit-and-drift method from 1050 medium carbon steel. Students will fit and finish a commercial handle; time allowing, there will be an opportunity to embellish the handles and heads. Matthew will explain the various methods of making a tomahawk or axe in the wrap-and-weld method and its variations. Blacksmithing topics covered will include forming the shape of the head, drifting the eye, fitting a handle, grinding and polishing the bit, heat treating, and sharpening.
