Tarsia Geometrica: Decorative Geometric Veneer Patterns
with Patrick Edwards
$615
$550 tuition + $65 material fee
Workshop Description
Geometrical marquetry, known in English as parquetry and Tarsia geometrica in France, is one of the easiest and most exciting types of surface decoration. It uses small scraps of veneer, which are often thrown out, to cover large surfaces. The tools are basic and inexpensive. This class will teach the students how to make “frisage” and “jeux de fond,” which are common patterns in antique furniture, and how to adapt these methods to modern forms. The proper method for making an assembly board will be demonstrated, and each student will be able to build different geometric designs as practice for their own use. Each student will be provided with a jig and special backsaw, which they can keep.
Key Points
- Understanding essential historic patterns
- Building a sawing jig
- Keeping the elements in proper order
- Building and using an assembly board
- Working with protein glue
