Making Marquetry Coasters
with Jack Mauch
$595
$550 tuition + $45 material fee
Workshop Description
Many woodworkers assume marquetry is an advanced skill, but the truth is that anyone can do it-even complete beginners. This weekend workshop offers a safe, fun, and rewarding introduction to woodworking through the decorative art of marquetry. Students will learn essential marquetry and veneering techniques by creating one or two sets of coasters. Jack will demonstrate traditional bevel-cut marquetry as well as stack-cut marquetry, an efficient method for producing multiples and repeating patterns. The class will also explore parquetry, including how to use simple jigs to design tessellating geometric motifs. In addition to hands-on technique, students will take part in a crash course in 2D design, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources-art, literature, math, science, nature, and even pop culture. While this class is perfectly suited for beginners, experienced furniture makers will also discover new ways to incorporate the decorative possibilities of veneer into their work.
