Introduction to Wood Lamination to Create Curved Sculptures
with Marc Fish
$600
$550 tuition + $50 material fee
Workshop Description
Internationally acclaimed artist and designer Marc Fish leads this two-day introduction to the sculptural possibilities of laminated veneer. Renowned for ethereal, layered works that blur the lines between fine furniture, sculpture, and lighting, Marc brings decades of experience and experimentation to the classroom. In this immersive workshop, students explore how to transform thin veneers into flowing, three-dimensional forms inspired by themes of erosion, relics, and transformation. Instruction covers every stage of the process, from planning a sculpture to preparing and laminating veneers using techniques that minimize or disguise glue lines. Students will experiment with free-form vacuum bag lamination, learn how to make their own vacuum bags, and investigate different hardware options. Once laminated, pieces are shaped and refined with hand tools such as rasps, spokeshaves, and gouges, as well as power tools like Dremels and die grinders. By the end of the course, each participant will complete a small sculpture and gain skills that can be scaled to future projects in furniture, model making, lighting, or installation. This course is ideal for designers, makers, and curious beginners. No prior woodworking experience is required.
