German ring turning is a unique process that was designed for toy making 200 years ago. Simon has brought it back with a modern twist for sculptural pieces. He fell down this rabbit hole when looking to challenge himself with learning better tool control. In this class, tool control will be the main focus, as it will be a challenge. Students will start with a detailed run-through on the process of planing a complex project. This will cover limitations of the tools and chucks, as well as limitations in design. Simon will discuss how to navigate these issues through problem solving in design. Most of the work during the weekend will be on the lathe, where the focus will be on accurate cuts with a focus on good technique. For Simon, being able to make a piece like the German ring turning greatly helped his accuracy and intent with all his other turning. The goal is to increase the skill level for each student and, hopefully, produce some pieces that are beyond their expectations.
