This class is an opportunity to experience the process of designing veneered furniture with flat and curved panel components with world-renowned marquetry furniture maker Paul Schürch. Students will focus on composing a drawing of an original piece of furniture and planing out the construction so success can be assured. Whatever your current skill level in design might be, whether an idea comes from a picture of a contemporary piece, a historical reference, or a concept you bring as a CAD file, napkin sketch, or scale model-Paul will demonstrate a process students can use to render a scale model into full-scale, shop-ready drawings. Everyone will gain experience rendering a basic drawing, building a clamping caul for the vac press to make a veneered curved test panel for their project, and safely cutting it to size. The drawing is then refined to the curve, minimizing mistakes before they occur. The drawing process allows aesthetic and mechanical issues to be resolved, helps compile material lists, guides hardware selection, supports template creation, or facilitates outsourcing components to others.
