Workshop Description
This one-week intensive explores the art and precision of roof framing and cutting. Guided by Ryan, students will work through the same techniques he has refined over years on the job. The class begins with blueprint reading and learning how to mark a roof plan with the key information needed to calculate and cut each part of the roof system. Paying attention to the roof pitches at play as well as the overhang projections, students will learn how to graphically create a full-size drawing of the rafter tails, sharing the same height and projection overhangs. This will provide the carpenter with the very important H.A.P. (height above plate) as well as any additional plating needed to line the tails up at the overhang. From there, students will create full-size rafter tail drawings to determine accurate fascia heights, then cut and assemble a small mockup to see how it all comes together. The course then moves into hips and valleys, where Ryan introduces his signature “plan view” method: a full-size drawing that becomes the map of the entire roof. Students will practice building their own plan view, apply functions on a Construction Master Pro Trig calculator, and use their drawings to lay out and cut hips, valleys, commons, and jack rafters. The plan view is the map of the roof and all its parts. It is the most important piece of the puzzle, used to calculate the roof parts-every single piece. Along the way, you’ll build small-scale models to see how geometry on paper translates into three-dimensional accuracy. By the end of the week, you’ll understand the full process of roof framing-from tails to cut sheets to complex irregular hips and valleys. These skills will not only sharpen your current abilities but also give you the knowledge to precut an entire roof system before the crew ever raises a wall. This class will cover a lot of ground, so a decent understanding of roof framing is recommended and would be helpful, but not necessary. These techniques also apply to making complex furniture.
Key Points
- Understanding how to line up fascia heights with equal overhangs
- Determining H.A.P. (height above plate)
- Understanding plan view and how to create them
- Using plan view to calculate lengths
- Calculating all roof parts
- Deciding what’s important as a roof cutter and recognizing it on blueprints
