Workshop Description
Ready to add bold, durable color to your metalwork? This hands-on workshop introduces powder coating as a vibrant surface finishing technique for jewelry components and metal objects. Unlike paint, powder coat is a finely ground pigment that’s electrostatically charged, applied to metal, and then heat-cured to create a smooth, resilient finish. It’s an accessible, non-toxic process that opens exciting possibilities for color, pattern, and layered design. Throughout the week, students will learn how to apply powder coating to flat and dimensional forms using stencils, masking, and gradient layering. Janiga will discuss cold connections like rivets and wire joins and use embossing, piercing, and hydraulic die forming to shape dynamic elements. Additional techniques such as rolling mill textures, Prismacolor detailing, and surface distressing will push one’s work even further. Daily creative prompts like color challenges and collaborative swaps encourage exploration and help generate a playful library of samples and components. Whether you’re new to metal or looking to expand your color vocabulary, this workshop is a space for experimentation and skill-building. Students will leave with a range of test pieces, finished or in-progress jewelry forms, and a deeper understanding of how surface and color can shape personal meaning in their work. No prior metals experience is required. Just bring your curiosity, creativity, and a pile of metal parts ready for color. Open to all skill levels.
