A Charity Event in Memory of Herman Bueno: Shaker Oval Boxes with Chris Laschinger

A charity event in the memory of Herman Bueno

Class size: 20 people

A Note from Marc About Herman

Herman (and his wife Paula) were both very special people in the birth and growth of MASW. Involved from the very beginning, Herman helped me remodel the building, prepare stock, clean the shop after each workshop, assist in classes for nearly 30 years, and began teaching Shaker Oval Boxes and Chip Carving almost 20 years ago. Paula, from the start, was the front gate of the school. She managed the office, answered the phone, and handled all registrations. Over the years, she developed friendships with tens of thousands of MASW students.

Chris Laschinger is an integral part of MASW. He has completed his Master’s here, been named Student of the Year, and now directs our Intern Program. He assisted Herman, along with many others over the years, and when Herman was no longer able to teach, he asked Chris to take over and continue his Shaker Oval Box class.

The class is free to all participants, but there is a $600 cost that covers workshops and materials. This money goes directly to Herman’s scholarship and is tax deductible. For more information on how you can help, click to contact Marc at his email

Here’s the Plan

In this class, students will make five nested oval Shaker boxes. Chris will begin the first day with a little history and the tradition of making Shaker boxes. Box materials, bending forms, tools, and optional/alternative procedures will be presented.

Students will start by measuring and making the bands, choosing and cutting the finger patterns, drilling tack holes, and then soaking the veneer bands in hot water. These bands will be shaped around a bending form, tacked, and then allowed to dry. On the second day, students will fit the top and bottom, as well as drill and mount the wooden pegs that hold the boxes together. By the end of the day, Chris will share his method for finishing the boxes.

This class is perfect for an individual or for a parent/child combination. Be aware—making Shaker oval boxes can be habit-forming!
