Workshop Description
The carving knife is a tool that reminds most people of family dinners and of the generations sitting down to break bread. These iconic knives help to create meals for family and loved ones. Well-made carving sets can last lifetimes, and this class will give students the opportunity to create one of their very own. In this weeklong class, students will make their own carving set, including a knife from high-carbon steel with a hidden tang wooden handle and a matching fork. Once the basic forms are done, students will explore the traditional technique of wire inlay to add interest, personality, and to give their work that “one-of-a-kind” flair. All aspects of bladesmithing will be covered, from forging the blade and the fork to shape, filing and grinding to refine the form, then heat treating, followed by final grinding and polishing. Students will make and fit a wooden handle that has special inlay work. Lastly, students will learn the art of sharpening, with special attention given to the design and geometry of this kind of knife. This class is intended as an introductory class, but some forging experience will be helpful.
