Workshop Description

Did you ever see an amazing model either at an exhibition, in a magazine, or at a friends? Did you wonder how they made it look so realistic? Why didn’t it look like plastic? That’s what students will be learning here. Students will first learn why the kit directions are not always the best way to assemble and paint the kit. Chris will start with the basics of removing, cleaning, and fitting parts, creating sub-assemblies, using glues, and hiding seams. Students will learn the necessary tools required and their use and will start priming and base coat painting the sub-assemblies. If students have and use an airbrush, Chris encourages them to bring it to use in the class. There will be a lot of brush painting as well and even ways to make pieces of plastic look like rusted cast iron. Students will learn various painting techniques, including dry brushing, using washes and panel line paints, and Speed Paints. As students progress through the build, they will have time while the glue dries to move on to more advanced techniques. Chris will discuss working with Photo Etch (PE), aftermarket parts, decals, and other techniques. Students will leave the class with their finished “Revenge of the Creature Model” with renewed enthusiasm for modeling and with the new skills to take their work to the next level.
