Workshop Description
In this hands-on workshop, students will design and build a sculptural side table inspired by organic, nature-based forms. The class begins with training the eye to see potential furniture components in the natural world, then developing those ideas through full-scale sketches. With designs in hand, students will learn how to translate complex, curved forms into fully shaped components using woodworking equipment typically intended for flat work, requiring careful planning and a precise order of operations. Joinery will be laid out with an emphasis on smooth sculptural transitions between legs and aprons. Once the structure is established, the focus shifts to carving and shaping. Students will work with traditional hand tools such as drawknives, spokeshaves, rasps, and gouges, while also learning how to sharpen and maintain them. Although power carving will be discussed, the emphasis will remain on reliable, accessible hand tool methods. As the project nears completion, students will experiment with glue-up strategies tailored to their unique designs, tackling the challenge of clamping irregularly shaped parts. The class concludes with an introduction to basic finishing techniques. Each participant can expect to complete one small side table, with or without finish depending on the complexity of their design.
