Workshop Description

This five-day class will involve many different woodworking techniques, beginning with a design overview of the box interior storage and exterior veneer with a marquetry top. To create the corner joinery for the box, students will set up a table router jig to cut the long dovetail splines. Afterward, the focus shifts to mastering veneering techniques, which involve using bending plywood as a caul to veneer the serpentine front of the box. Finally, students will cut the box in half using a sled on the table saw for precision. In this workshop, each participant will create their own marquetry top veneer using the “painting in wood” technique. Students will craft custom corner banding for the edges of the box, then route, glue, and flush the edges with a cabinet scraper. Next, they’ll construct three-coin trays featuring dovetail spline corners and lap joint dividers. Each tray will be equipped with a brass knob for easy lifting, cleverly designed to fit into drilled holes that remain hidden. Students will also use hand chisels to create mortises for the 1 ¼” brass plate, 95-degree stop hinges. The class concludes with finishing techniques-oiling the box.
