Fly Me to the Moon: A Fun Spindle Turning Weekend
with David Wantz
$580
$550 tuition + $30 material fee
Workshop Description
We are going to build wooden rockets this weekend. This is a great class for those who are looking to improve on their spindle-turning skills. Need to practice with a skew chisel or roughing gouge? Participants will have plenty of time to perfect those techniques. Want to develop a gift program for your club? These rockets will be a hit. Each student will make two rockets and a rocket-sled jig on Saturday. The first step is to prepare a two-colored blank by ripping and re-gluing the pieces. As the glue cures, participants will turn their first rocket blank, getting the proportions and curves right. David will demonstrate how to lay out and cut the grooves for the rocket fins. Then students will shape ¼” fins and install them. When the glue is cured on the first blank, it will be cut apart and rotated to produce checkerboard designs on the rocket body. With two rockets in the hangar, participants will use Sunday to be more creative and will be encouraged to bring those scraps from home they just couldn’t throw away. They will use them to build some fun, even zany, rockets. What kind of materials? Well, anything that can be glued up and turned reliably, like plywood, cactus skeletons, laminations, and veneers. Students will make a toggle-clamped v-block to cut the rocket fins safely and reliably, then make and use a handy template for accurately laying out 120° angles for fitting the three fins. WARNING: Your sleep is likely going to be interrupted by dreams of other rocket shapes and materials. All skill levels are welcome, and students will come away with three or four rockets approximately 8” to 10” tall.
