Building a Reciprocal (Mandala) Roof Using Stereotomy
with Patrick Moore
$600
$550 tuition + $50 material fee
Workshop Description
Bring geometry, timbercraft, and a little structural magic together over one concentrated weekend. In this two-day hands-on course, each participant will design, draw, and build their own scaled reciprocal (Mandala) roof model. Using practical stereotomy, students will solve the entire layout on paper, drawing a scaled plan that dictates every rafter length, angle, and bearing, then translate that drawing into accurate cutting, joinery, and assembly. By the end of day two, participants will have a finished model, the drawings and templates to repeat the work, and the confidence to scale the idea up. Students should have basic competence with hand and drafting tools.
Key Points
- How reciprocal (Mandala) frames work structurally and visually
- Practical stereotomy for roof layout: drawing a scaled plan to determine rafter lengths, bearing faces, and angles
- Step-by-step layout methods that remove guesswork
- Use the drawing as your working jig
- Precise joinery techniques so each rafter seats cleanly on the previous one
- Each participant builds and takes home their own model
- How to interpret and adapt a scaled model’s geometry for full-size construction
