Chainsaw Techniques: Cutting Bowl Blanks from a Log

with Clay Foster

$550

Workshop Description

One of the joys of green wood turning is the direct involvement with the tree itself. It thrills the soul to be there when the two sawn log halves fall open, and you are the first person to have ever seen the inside of that tree. This seminar with Clay Foster will take students through the process of starting with a log and ending up with a bowl. The day will begin with a discussion of wood properties and how they affect the way to cut up a log, safe chainsawing to produce a rough bowl blank, and safe bandsawing of the rough blank to get a bowl blank ready for the lathe. Clay will then proceed to discuss the process of turning a roughed-out bowl, how to dry it, and how to put a dried rough bowl back on the lathe for final turning. The workshop will finish with basic chainsaw maintenance and chain sharpening. Participants won’t need to bring a chainsaw, but do bring a notebook and camera to help remember it all.
