Workshop Description

Have you ever wondered how to add elegant curves and graceful lines to an otherwise plain cabinet? The coopered whiskey cabinet is one of the best projects to expand your woodworking skills. This wall-hanging cabinet combines intermediate-level joinery, coopering, and hand shaping with thoughtful design principles to create a piece that is both functional and refined. Under Erik’s guidance, students will begin with the fundamentals of design and grain selection, learning when and how to use flat-sawn, quarter-sawn, or bookmatched boards to create visual harmony. From there, participants will build the cabinet carcass using housed stub or floating tenons, stopped dadoes for shelves, and rabbets and grooves for the rear panel. Along the way, students will practice coopering to create a curved door, refine their skills with edge profiling and surface prep, and sharpen their hand tools for clean, precise results. Discussions will balance efficiency and craftsmanship, such as when to use hand planes versus sanders, or routers versus hand tools. The class will conclude with Erik’s practical approach to finishing, offering techniques suited for both the professional and home shop. Students will leave with a completed cabinet ready to showcase a favorite bottle, as well as the knowledge and confidence to take on projects of this caliber in their own shops.
