Workshop Description
Cartonnage, the art of constructing and decorating boxes with layered paper, plaster, or fabric, has roots reaching back to ancient Egypt. Over centuries, this craft has evolved across cultures: from Egyptians layering papyrus and plaster for funerary objects to 19th-century France, where Ferdinand Revoul crafted paper-covered boxes for silkworm eggs, cosmetics, and candy. Later, artisans in Brazil refined the process by covering individual pieces with fabric before assembling the box. In this hands-on class, students will step into that rich history while learning the modern craft of cartonnage. Using sturdy 100-point book board (about the thickness of two stacked dimes), students will construct three beautiful and functional projects, each teaching different skills and techniques. By the end, you’ll not only have three finished pieces but also the knowledge to continue creating on your own.
