Workshop Description

Come and spend a week with Paul Schürch, one of the world’s premier veneer experts. If you have attended veneer classes in the past or currently work with veneer, you will not want to miss this opportunity. Students will learn the history of veneer and marquetry and how it has developed into what it is today. Paul will guide you in using raw veneer, ways to make veneer, handling, flattening, buying and storing. There will be hands-on sessions in book, slip, reverse, diamond, and four-way matching with decorative border work. There will be demonstrations on starbursts, advanced border work, parquet, edge details, and marquetry, which can be used for decoration, done in the Italian production method. This class not only teaches traditional veneering techniques but also covers modern day veneer cutting, joining, assembly, and finishing that is done in today’s shop setting. Students will learn how to choose substrates, glues, and practice preparing and assembling patterns, design and create marquetry, glue pressing using vac or screw clamping systems, and yes, sanding veneer with a 4 x 24 belt sander, then lacquering your finished pieces to take home with you. Many of today’s best marquetarians got their start by taking a class with Paul.
