Whale Tail Settee: Green Wood Working with Mike Clarkson June 27 - July 1, 2022

about this workshop

Come make a Windsor Settee! This class is a great introduction to settee or bench making where the seat is the central structural element. The rest of the parts are built into it to make a comfortable flexible and surprisingly strong piece of seated furniture. Students will shape their pine seat for comfort with adze, in-shave and travisher, or students can opt to use an Arbortech wheel to rough out the seat, then use the hand tools to clean it up. Mike will teach green wood working techniques, where to get green wood how to split and dry it and the benefits of using green wood in certain parts. The back spindles will be split from a section of oak log, shaved using a draw knife and spokeshave at a shaving horse. In this class students will explore leg and back rest angles. Mike will demonstrate how to layout sight lines, then drill by hand-and-eye both tapered round mortise and tenon and standard round mortise and tenon joinery. In each step of the build, students will learn how to complete the task with hand tools and machines.

In this style of Windsor, the shoulder spindle goes through the arm rest making the back rest extraordinarily strong and still flexible. The arms are carved with a scroll in the front and a whale tail in the back using just a few gouges. This class makes building seating furniture of your own design accessible. If you are just getting started in chair making, this is a great introduction, and if you are a more advanced woodworker, this class will help to streamline your build.
