Marquetry is the art of creating decorative designs and pictures by skillfully utilizing the grain, figure and colors of thin veneers and sometimes other materials such as shell or ivory. This technique is ancient, stretching back to Egypt 3,000 years ago and was developed to great depth during the European Renaissance. Matthew is a master of marquetry and the details and content of his imagery produce incredible depth and form using different species of wood, utilizing only their natural colors. Demonstrations will include developing a design, selecting woods, cutting veneer using the double bevel technique, sand shading, gluing, pressing and finishing techniques. Students will work with shop-sawn veneers which are far more forgiving than commercial veneers. Matthew will demonstrate how to make these veneers in your own shop.
