The difference between a good project and an eye-popping project is often in its decorative details. There are many ways to decorate wood. This class will focus on the use of silver wire to create inlays and borders as a way to embellish wood. These techniques are applicable for projects from turned bowls to furniture legs and beyond. Students will explore the methods used for using inlayed wire to create vines or scrolls in the rococo tradition and how these details can be enhanced with crushed stone, mother of pearl or metal filings. Various design elements will also be discussed. Tools necessary to inlay the wire will be constructed or adapted from other tools. Proper application of the wire to the wood will be demonstrated and practiced by students. Several practice projects will be provided as well as the opportunity to devise your own design, then implement it in a project of your own. The layout procedure for curved surfaces, such as turned bowls, will be shown. If you wish to expand your repertoire of decorative skills, this class will offer simple techniques for striking project enhancements. Scott would like to dedicate this class to John Koch, who was an inspiration to the entire MASW family. John was the craftsman who taught us all this process and is sadly missed by the entire MASW community.
