In this class students will jump back in history to discuss Viking style carving. This style of wood carving was really common in northern European cultures about a thousand years ago. In Norway, Germany and Northern Slavic countries, one knife carving was practiced with the same style and technique. Try to imagine living a thousand years ago in the Viking culture, sailing on long voyages with no specialty tools to express your talents. No gouges, veiners or V-tools; the only tool available is just one knife, and hence this technique of carving was developed. Today in many parts of Europe, this style of carving is very common and it is still possible to find beautiful historical artifacts from one knife carving. The possibilities are unlimited.
