More Information on this Workshop

This two-part class is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to make an awarding winning and comfortable dining or desk chair first designed by Michael in 1979. Michael will go through the design process—what inspired the original design and how he refined this chair by blending design elements gleaned from the history of furniture. Michael is well-known for his “no math” approach to making complex compound joinery. Instead of using a method that relies on series of custom-made jigs to cut joints and layout parts, each student will use Michael’s approach to tackle the joinery challenge on this beautiful chair. Part 1 will involve steam bending the curved parts and making the remaining components that are sawn from solid wood. Part 2 will involve working with the now dry and set steam bent parts. All the components are shaped and assembled in the second week. This is several classes rolled into one: chair design, joinery, jig construction, upholstery and even inlay techniques. The approach that students will learn during this class for reproducing this chair can be adapted to make almost any piece of furniture. Michael suggests that students attend the June 12-13 Making the Jigs and Fixtures for the #1 Chair workshop so you will have copies of the most important fixtures for building additional chairs when you get home.
