Derek has a number of gauges in his everyday tool kit; some fancy and extremely accurate for generating baselines for dovetailing or shoulder lines for joinery, and some for less critical early stage marking out. This gauge is one of the latter. Based on a traditional design most adjustments can be made while holding the beam in one hand and advancing the stock with your thumb in one direction or allowing gravity to work in the other. Though simple, this project seeks to overcome a number of basic technical challenges in order to produce a tool that not only performs well but lasts. The skills students will learn in making this marking gauge are directly transferable to other joinery tasks.
