Making a Federal Hunt Board with Headley & Hamilton October 17 - 21, 2022

about this workshop

This weeklong class will be on building a Virginia/North Carolina Hunt Board. Students will not only sharpen their tools but their skills as well while building a taller country cousin of a Federal sideboard. A mixture of both modern machinery and traditional hand tools will be used to help in build this piece. Although some sideboard are extremely formal, this piece with its simple lines and gracefully scalloped skirt, is still quite elegant. Some of the features of this Virginia/North Carolina Hunt Board are the flat front with straight tapered legs, cock beaded drawer fronts and a fine detail line that is set in the drawer front and the outer edge of the top. Students will learn the period joinery process by cutting hand cut dovetails and mortise and tenons used to hold the case together. There are many additional embellishments which can be added at home. Jeff and Steve have offered this class many times in the past and have found that many wives (or husbands) have signed their husbands (or wives) up for this class. They get the double satisfaction of getting a beautiful Hunt board while getting rid of their spouse for a week. What could be better? Students will be emailed a cut list and asked to bring pieces sized so that valuable time can be saved during class to concentrate on joinery and not the milling process.
