Description

Although this is technically a carving class, students will construct a Chippendale footstool, emphasizing the skills needed to sculpt cabriole legs with ball-and-claw feet and shell-carved knees. Alf will show how to fashion the fine flush joints between the rails and posts. Students will gain skills in making exact patterns of complex sculptural parts, bandsawing those complex parts, advanced spokeshave and rasping techniques, and sculptural and low-relief carving techniques. Most students’ stools should be completed by the end of the week, ready to be finished and upholstered, and there might even be a little time to discuss how to French polish your masterpiece. This project is simple enough to make one for all your family and friends but so impressive they’ll think you’re a genius with wood (if they don’t already). Students should have familiarity with sharpening techniques and basic mortise and tenon construction and be reasonably comfortable with a bandsaw. Get ready to have some fun and amaze yourself.
