Make a Traveling Tool Chest with Scott Wynn May 2 - 6, 2022

about this workshop

In this workshop students will build a tool chest suitable for safely carrying their most used tools: from project to project, or class to class, or even just room to room. The objective is to build the lightest, strongest, most durable, and the best looking, tool storage unit that can be easily moved around while keeping your tools readily accessible without having to dig through layers of tools to find them. The chest fully encloses the tools minimizing damage from an inopportune rain shower and casual misappropriation; the top is clean and flat with the case both open and closed and can be used as a work surface. It uses a system of drawers/trays to organize your tools, with a larger well below suitable for hand planes, drills or the occasional additional tool. It also includes a significant area for the storage of handsaws, coping saws, jewelers saws, Japanese saws, level, and framing square.

This storage system is also suitable for storing tools of other crafts such as sewing, shoe making, blacksmithing and working with leaded glass to mention a few. The construction of this case involves specific considerations as the dynamics of a moving case carrying weight has requirements different from standard casework joinery (Hint: London pattern dovetails won’t work here!). Scott will demonstrate woodbending, how to make a simple, discreet latch of metal, ways to make multiple cases, how to solve storing individual tools, and explore variations that can individualize your box.
