This class will be a chance for students to enjoy a hands-on exploration of how and why to use carbon fiber and epoxy in their woodworking. Carbon fiber weaves have some very striking aesthetics and profound structural strength possibilities for woodworkers. Without utilizing carbon fiber for this project, the frame of the “Z” chair could not possibly be as delicate as it appears from a structural standpoint and the seat and back rest would not have such a striking contrast when compared in relationship to the frame. By choosing the proper weave, carbon fiber can add an immense amount of structural integrity with virtually no weight gain. By choosing the appropriate epoxy, the carbon fiber can be either flexible or extremely rigid. In addition to learning about carbon fiber and epoxy techniques, students will be introduced to laminate bending in three dimensions, building 3D compound forms for vacuum pressing and glue-ups, sculpting furniture components to create flow and movement in a piece of furniture, and using resin as a final and very durable finish. Before the class, students will discuss with Mark their preference between making a child chair or adult chair.
