This class is open to woodworkers of all skill levels. Prior CNC and software experience is helpful, but not required. In this class, students will learn how to design vector artworks to produce highly intricate marquetry/inlay artworks using a laser and a CNC router. Students will use Adobe Illustrator basic and advance techniques to draw/edit vector shapes, to trace a photograph into vector shapes, and to edit a vector artwork from the internet appropriate for marquetry and inlay. Students will further process these vector artworks using ImagePaint software (an Adobe Illustrator Plug-in) to apply JPEG images of real wood veneers to the vector shapes and come up with an attractive simulation of the artwork. Next, with ImagePaint’s V-Carve and Custom Molding features, students will adorn the marquetry artwork with 2.5D embellishments using a CNC router. Finally, they will create the toolpaths with ImagePaint, send them to a laser and a CNC router, cut the veneers and carve out the 2.5D embellishments. Students will go home with all the computer skills necessary to design and create the most intricate and stunning marquetry/inlay artworks rarely seen with traditional techniques.
