about this workshop
The mortise and tenon joint are the oldest joint in woodworking; through Biblical references it can be dated back to around 3,500 B.C. and through the Egyptian culture back to around 2,500 B.C. Some experts even argue that all woodworking joints are just variations of the mortise and tenon joint. This two-day course will start with a PowerPoint presentation on the anatomy and design of the mortise and tenon joint. Diagrams will be used to help identify the names of all parts as well as the basic design and sizing principles for the joint. Examples will be shown, and handouts of the joint anatomy will be given to each student.
This two-day course will allow each student to build and take home one or two completed jigs each for machining mortises and tenons. These jigs will enable students to increase both their accuracy and speed in machining mortise and tenons in their future projects. Each student will receive a free CD containing a Power Point slide show of all class instructions and demonstrations plus a class commemorative custom hardwood clipboard which can be used during the class to organize notes and course handouts.
