More Information on this Workshop

This one-day class will focus on how to carve spirals or rope twists on a turned post. Rope twists are common on all styles of furniture but especially furniture from the 17th century. Students will start by turning a post, then Jeff and Steve will show how to segment the post into a series of lines that represent the spiral. The layout will cover many different types and directions of spirals. They have many secrets to help produce and execute this age-old tradition. Jeff will show how to prepare the post so it can be separated in half or quarters after turning and carving. After the layout of the spiral, Steve will show students how to hand carve the spiral. This will be a step-by-step process which can be used on countless future projects including a simple barber pole or a tapered finial flame. Very few woodworkers know this process, so if you are looking at a way to enhance your work, this could be a new “twist.”
