This table is part of a series of designs for garden furniture that has proven to be quite popular. The top of the table can be detached if desired and will become a serving tray. Or the table design can easily be converted to garden or hallway bench. This project could be a primer for the more ambitious and challenging garden chair and ottoman. The students will learn how to construct laminating forms, how to efficiently apply glue to groups of laminates then clamp them around the form. Preparing laminated curved parts for a variety of machine and hand processes will be covered.
Designing and constructing furniture for use outdoors requires additional woodworking knowledge; what adhesives are best, appropriate wood joinery and when to use special hardware. And very important, the design and finish must be able to withstand the elements and shed rainwater and even snow.
