More Information on this Workshop

Making all types of cutting tools, such as chisels, axes and froes, share many of the same blacksmithing techniques. Through the lens of a set of simple bench chisels students will learn how to forge, grind, shape, polish and sharpen these tools. But more importantly, how to design these tools to work well. In this class students will be able to make more than a heirloom set of chisels, but will also develop a skill set to make many of the cutting tools needed for a huge variety of work. Everyone in the craft knows that working with our hands to create something is special, but to make something by hand with tools you made by hand is especially satisfying. The chisel set made during the week will include the five most common sizes of bench chisels; ¼” ⅜” ½” ¾” and 1” widths. The blades will be forged from a high carbon steel bar then ground and filed to final shape. The chisels will then be heat treated and polished before fitting the custom fit wooden handles. By the end of the workshop, Matthew will show students how to create razor sharp edges on their new set of chisels.
