about this workshop
Burn… Fuse… Light… Solder… Fire… Anneal… Heat…Melt!
Do you have a burning desire to add these exciting skills and more to your toolbox? Join award-winning metalsmiths Lisa Gohr Harman and Amy Thrush-Dreves for this one week course for beginner and intermediate enamelists. Enameling is the art of fusing powdered glass onto metal to create opaque and transparent colored surfaces. Learn the exciting history of this ancient art form to make your very own colorful enameled jewelry or small objects with the torch or kiln.
To learn basic skills, students will start off by enameling a light switch plate, and then move on to apply these skills to more individualized projects. This may include pendants, earrings, pins, hair adornment, tie tacks, etc. Experimental techniques such as sgraffito, crackling, and stenciling will be taught. Learn basic fold forming and use the hydraulic press to create dimensional metal to enamel on. Basic soldering and setting skills may be addressed for those interested. These skills can be applied to other fields and metalsmithing applications! Other 3D objects such as metal spun copper vessels will be made available for purchase to enamel on! No prior experience is necessary to take this class.
