Spend a week with box maker Matt Kenney and learn to design and make beautiful boxes. Matt will explain the fundamentals of good design like how to perfect proportions, select grain, and combine multiple woods to achieve a balance between their colors, and then work with students individually to help them design a box or two. The class also will learn the techniques needed to make flawless boxes. Matt will demonstrate how he resaws lumber to create grain that flows uninterrupted around the entire box, cuts perfect miters, fits lids, makes interesting pulls, and adds a dash of color with fabric and milk paint. Students will also learn how to apply shellac to create and give their boxes a beautiful luster. At the end of the class, students will leave not just with a few boxes that they’ve made during the week, but also a good understanding of how to design and make elegant boxes in their own shop.
