This class will be a great opportunity to spend a week learning the craft of woodturning with one of the best woodturners in North America. Michael starts off with a detailed discussion of lathes, tool selection, safety, and sharpening. He introduces students to four areas of woodturning: 1) SPINDLE TURNING, including wood selection, use and sharpening of tools for spindle work, offset turning, bending spindles in the microwave, cutting/assembling spindles for application to bowls and furniture, and combining spindles and bowls to make a ladle; 2) BOWL TURNING, including selecting and understanding inherent qualities of wood, turning green and dry wood, using gouges and scrapers to get a clean cut, using different sanding techniques, adding and subtracting wood to create unique designs, turning a bowl with carved feet, turning very thin bowls, and cutting and reassembling bowls; 3) HOLLOW TURNING, including basic techniques, cutting, reassembling to make a fish or teapot, and combining spindles with hollow turning to make a Christmas ornament or rattle; and 4) BOX MAKING, including ways to make a basic box, the use of hook tools, and creating oval and curved lidded containers. By the end of the week you will be on your way to turning excellence.
