More Information on this Workshop

If you are interested in laser marquetry, rastering or engraving and would like a fun project, consider attending this one-day discussion on building your own laser. The proceeds from the auction will go to the Roger Cliffe Memorial Foundation. The class will cover parts, suppliers, wattage vs. length of laser tubes, software, wiring, aligning the laser beam, controllers, case construction, cooling, air assist, basic troubleshooting, and the instructors own “Fume Tomb” for handling laser exhaust. Also, there will be a discussion of software such as CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, LaserCad, LaserSoft, and Vincent Doan’s amazing ImagePaint. At the end of the day, an auction will be held to award the winner with a brand new (used for class demo, only) laser machine. The auctioned item will be all of the laser’s innards: 45-50 watt tube, (2) power supplies, 20″ x 12″ gantry, x and y axes stepper motors, (2)drivers, controller, on-off and emergency stop switch, laser lenses, limit switches, amp meter, tubing, wiring, and air compressor, all wired but mounted to a flat board. The user will need to build or purchase the case, exhaust and water chiller. Although this class will focus on a 20″ x 12″ machine, DIY savings really add up when building larger and more powerful lasers.
