Mark Whitley

MARK WHITLEY has been making wooden projects since he got a hammer for his sixth birthday. After earning a B.A. in Peace Studies in 1998, Mark returned to his hometown in Southern Kentucky and opened his furniture and sculpture studio. His work has been featured in Woodwork Magazine, Bespoke: Furniture From 101 International Artists, A Craftsman’s Legacy, and other publications. His philosophy of “making things of beauty and living a peaceful life” landed Mark on Season 4 of “A Craftsman’s Legacy” and other programs for PBS. Although every piece Mark creates is one-of-a-kind, there is cohesion in his body of work, mostly based on a set of curves that define nearly every piece. Mark has also received awards from The Tanne Foundation, The Kentucky Arts Council, and other arts organizations.  Mark enjoys sharing the successes and pitfalls of a life as an independent artist, and anything he’s learned along the way. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar, and spending time with his family and their 1976 Airstream.
