The Art of Building a Fly Rod with Becky Loyd July 25-29, 2022
This class will teach the student the craft of making an extremely fine fishing instrument. Students will learn the various components that are found on a fishing rod, the order in assembling these parts, and how they can use these workings to build a better rod to increase their fishing enjoyment. Becky will assist students with the various steps of building a 9-foot “5” weight rod. Locating the spine, determining the power and action or their blank, handle glue-up and guide placement will be discussed. All students will have the opportunity for hands-on practice with decorative elements, such as the “diamond wrap”, feather embellishment, cross wraps, shading, and more, before choosing which of these embellishments they will add to their own rod, giving it that truly personalized look. Epoxies will be demystified. And finally, the session on why we have rod failures and how to repair them will get the student back on the water and keep them there much longer after learning how to correct these common mishaps. Tips for creating your own rod building business, record keeping, and taxes will also be discussed.
