Techniques for Curved Furniture: Making an Elliptical Demilune Table with Owain Harris May 23-27, 2022

Have you wanted to try building furniture with curves but didn’t know where to start? Or have you already dipped a toe into the world of curvature but need some inspiration to keep going? In this weeklong workshop, students will learn the fundamental techniques for exploring the world of curved and shaped furniture making. Using the classic elliptical demilune table as a starting point, students will begin with an exploration of lamination techniques by building a curved form to be used in gluing the laminated apron. Owain will discuss and demonstrate the joinery for attaching the legs to the apron using special jigs designed to be used with the plunge router. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with various hand and power tools to create sculpted and shaped legs. There will be two options for the table top, students can choose between making a solid wood top or a decorative veneered top. Finally, Owain will discuss the options for finishing your new table.
